Honolulu Ocean Safety and city emergency services responded around 1 p.m. to a call about a man who appeared to have suffered several shark bites near Mlaekahana beach on the north shore of Oahu. Paramedics then brought Perry to shore on a jet ski and pronounced him dead at the scene.

Perry was “a lifeguard loved by everyone,” Honolulu Ocean Safety acting chief Kurt Lager said during a news conference, according to the AP agency.
“It is very well known on the north coast. He is a professional surfer known around the world,” Lager said. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved others more.”

Perry was also an actor, having played small roles in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film in 2011, as well as Blue Crush (2002) and Hawaii Five-O (2011).
He had been working as a lifeguard since July 2016, the AP reported, and had surfed professionally for more than a decade.
Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi called Perry’s death a “a tragic loss” during a press conference, according to the BBC. “Tamayo was a legendary and highly respected boatman,” he said, adding that he “grew up here” and was “just a great member of our team.”
Shark warning signs were posted in the area after the attack, Ocean Safety officials said.
