Honor for Sandra Hüller: She is offered membership in the Oscar Academy

Sandra Hüller will soon be able to help decide who will receive the Oscars. At least if she accepts the Academy’s invitation.

Will Sandra Hüller (46), the star of “The Zone of Interest”, which won two Oscars, soon be able to have a say in the awarding of future golden boys? According to the press release from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Hüller is one of a total of 487 people who have been offered membership for this year. Each of the potential newcomers has qualified for this honor “thanks to their contributions to the film,” the statement says.

“These remarkably talented artists and professionals from around the world have made a significant impact on our filmmaking community.” If each of the nearly 500 candidates accepts, the Academy’s membership would grow to exactly 10,910 people. 9,934 of them, including Hüller, would then be eligible to vote on entries for the upcoming Oscar ceremony in early 2025.

A German director can also be happy

Hüller, who was nominated in the “Best Actress” category this year for “Anatomy of a Case”, is not the only one who could represent the German voice at the Academy Awards in the future. Director İlker Çatak (40) is also on the list of new member candidates. Like Hüller, Çatak also caused a stir at this year’s Oscars; his work “The Teachers’ Room” was nominated for the Oscar for “Best International Film” – but had to admit defeat to “The Zone of Interest”.

A total of 29 actors and actresses are in line for Oscar nominations, including Jessica Alba (43, “Sin City”), Jason Clarke (54, “Zero Dark Thirty”), Lily Gladstone (37, “Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Kate Mara (41, “The Martian”), to name just a few. In addition to Çatak, the other directors include Fede Álvarez (46, “Don’t Breathe”), David Yates (60, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”) and Justine Triet (45, “Anatomy of a Case”).

As a rule, the invited people accept the membership. Every now and then, however, someone decides against it, such as “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler (38). In 2021, he said he had turned down a corresponding invitation from 2016. He cited his dislike of the competitive structure of such an awards ceremony as the reason: “It feels strange to add a competition to an art form like film.”
