HBO announced Thursday that it has partnered with the BBC to co-produce Lionsa six-episode drama series from Gadd, who created, wrote and executive produces the series but is not attached to star in it.

The BBC had ordered Lions in February, ahead of Baby Reindeer’s premiere on Netflix, where it quickly became a smash hit and catapulted Gadd into the A-list. (That would also explain why Netflix, which typically seeks to secure global rights to its projects, is not part of Lions. HBO, on the other hand, frequently partners with the BBC on co-productions.)
Alexandra Brodsky (“Somewhere Boy”, “Rivals”) and Eshref Reybrouck (“Ferry: The Series,” “Cheyenne & Lola”) will direct Lions. There is no casting yet for the series, but production is expected to begin soon.
What Lions will be about, the new series from the creator of Baby Reindeer
“When Niall’s estranged ‘brother’ Ruben shows up at their wedding, an explosion of violence ensues that catapults us back through their lives. Spanning nearly forty years from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will cover the ups and downs of the brothers’ relationship, from their meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, the bad, the terrible, the funny, the angry and the challenging moments along the way. It will capture the wild energy of a changing city – even a changing world – and attempt to get to the bottom of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?” the synopsis reads.
Mam Tor Products will produce Lions for HBO in the US, as well as BBC One, BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer in the UK. Banijay Rights is handling international distribution outside the US, UK and Ireland.
