Emma Roberts: US star defends herself against “Nepo Baby” criticism

The debate about newcomers with celebrity parents, known as “Nepo babies,” continues. Actress Emma Roberts has now also commented on the matter.

For many months now, the supposedly privileged children of famous actors, musicians or models have been the subject of criticism on social media. The so-called “Nepo babies” are accused of owing their careers not to their talent, but solely to their famous names or influential relatives. The currently viral term is derived from the English word “nepotism”.

Young stars under fire

In addition to newcomers such as Kendall Jenner (28), Lily-Rose Depp (25), Dakota Johnson (34) and siblings Jaden (25) and Willow Smith (23), US actress Emma Roberts (33) is also regularly exposed to these accusations. Now the niece of “Pretty Woman” star Julia Roberts (56) and daughter of actor Eric Roberts (68) hit back verbally in a conversation.

There, the young talent explained: “People like to say that you have an advantage because you have a family in the industry. But the other side of the coin is that you have to prove yourself more.” It can also be observed that young women in particular are accused of having better starting conditions because of their famous names. “I don’t really see that being accused of this to the sons of famous actors,” said Roberts indignantly.

“Why doesn’t anyone accuse George Clooney of being a Nepo baby?”

To give an example, the actress took a scathing swipe at one of Hollywood’s biggest superstars. “I always joke: ‘Why doesn’t anyone accuse George Clooney of being a Nepo baby?’ Rosemary Clooney was an icon.” In fact, George Clooney’s (63) aunt Rosemary (1928-2002) was one of the most famous American actresses and singers in the 1950s. Regardless of gender, Emma Roberts concluded, no one should be blamed for “wanting to pursue their dream.”
