Venice Beach is one of the most famous places in Southern California. Numerous movements started here or settled here: The fitness movement emerged in the 30s, surfing culture became popular in the 60s, and later hippies, freaks, skaters and artists came. They all created a unique scene that this area is known for worldwide.
The photographer Dotan Saguy accompanied the residents of this district for three years and recorded his experiences in an illustrated book. It pays homage to these people who defy all constraints and norms and live out their individuality uninhibited.
The Venice Beach scene is threatened
Saguy was perhaps able to implement the project just in time: the continued existence of this unique culture is threatened. The gentrification that is advancing elsewhere is also having an effect here: Due to rising rents, a creeping displacement competition is taking place here, which is driving the long-established population away. Dotan Saguy created a permanent memorial to this person with his book.
The illustrated book “Venice Beach. The Last Days of a Bohemian Paradise” by Dotan Saguy has been published by Kehrer Verlag and costs 39.90 euros.
