What is Veneno, a short film by Wes Anderson on Netflix, about?
The story focuses on a single situation with three characters and takes place in a single setting: Harry Pope’s house (Benedict Cumberbatch), a British man in colonial India several decades ago. Pope is motionless in his bed when Woods (Dev Patel), his servant/assistant, arrives and discovers an alarming situation.
Pope, lying down and sweaty, whispers to Woods to take off his shoes and speak softly (conversations with the audience are not heard in the “reality” of the film) due to an imminent danger: he has a krait, a highly poisonous snake, between his clothes and his body. Any movement could provoke a lethal attack.
Woods attempts to fix the problem, calling Dr. Ganderbai (Ben Kingsley), who quickly arrives to apply his medical knowledge and resolve the situation. What follows is a complex and tense operation, with an unexpected outcome which shifts from a resolution of a specific problem to a deeper reflection on issues such as racism and British colonialism.
