The Grimme Online Award is given for outstanding productions on the Internet. In 2024, the renowned award was almost canceled for financial reasons – now the competition is taking place after all.
Despite its tight finances, the Grimme Institute is now planning a 2024 award for outstanding online journalism. The institute announced this in a newsletter. Proposals must be submitted by July 31. Nominations are to be announced at the beginning of September, and up to eight winners will be honored at the Grimme Institute in Marl on October 16.
It had long looked as if the online prize would fall victim to the current “radical austerity measures,” the statement said. The institute is all the more pleased. The unfunded Grimme Online Award is considered the most important award for outstanding online journalism in Germany and is awarded in several categories.
“Especially in times of growing disinformation and the increasing importance of Tiktok, Instagram and Co. as a source of information, the Grimme Online Award is more important than ever,” explained NRW Media Minister Nathanael Liminski (CDU).
The media institute in Marl had slipped into the red due to higher wage agreements and higher event and energy costs, among other things. This is why the online prize was temporarily put on hold. Now time is short – the competition usually starts in January.
