“The Boys”‘s Antony Starr explained the origin of Homelander’s obsession with milk

Based on the comic book of the same name, the Prime Video series features Starr as the sinister leader of a group of superheroes backed by a corrupt corporation.

Antony Starrthe star of The Boysspoke about his pseudo-superhero character Homelander’s unexpected milk fetish. It emerged in the first season and has since become his and the showrunner’s go-to humorous take on the fetish. Eric Kripke to his most die-hard fans.

“So, as I recall, it came out in the scripts. All credit to the writing team, because it was so weird,” he recalled to Rolling Stone. “It started with an X-ray vision of my Oedipal mummy figure.” [Madelyn Stillwell, interpretada por Elisabeth Shue] while I was breastfeeding, and I was pining like this and having this jealous relationship with the baby. And then at the beginning of season two, I found some of her… Homelander found some of her breast milk in a freezer and he lasered it, he started drinking it, he got caught.”

Starr continued: “And it was really funny and weird, and I think I sent an email to Eric after that scene saying, ‘Dude, we need to get as much milk as possible on this show.. This is going to be like a little motif or a signature thing. I mean, we have to do it.’ And he was like, ‘One step ahead of you, bro. I’m putting it in everything.’ And now, every chance we get, the milk thing comes up. We don’t have to do anything with it either. If I just look at somebody and take a sip of milk, there’s a twist to it. It’s become a really fun thing. The fans have really fallen in love with it. And they’ve enjoyed it.”

In the season 3 episode “Here Comes a Candle to Light Your Bed”, Homelander finds a cow on a farm, milks it, and drinks the milk from a bucket.

In the psyche of Homelander

Based on the comic book of the same name, the Prime Video series features Starr as Homelander, the sinister leader of a group of world-famous superheroes backed by a corrupt corporation. The New Zealand actor also drew comparisons of the “psychopathic narcissist” character to Donald Trump.

“It’s interesting because that was something that came up a lot. To me it’s kind of a red herring because if we stayed strictly in that lane, the character would be one-dimensional or two-dimensional, and we wanted to create something a little bit more complex than that,” he explained. “We wanted something more than a cardboard cutout. It’s the same as you could see him as Superman and just turn evil. I don’t want to do that. I want to start from scratch and build a human being that was, well, How was he raised? He was raised in a laboratory. What harm did that do to him? In season four, we really get into that. ‘Homecoming’ is a fun episode.”

“But let me put it this way. Any parallels that there are to the real world, they have to be driven by our characters. The narrative has to be driven by the needs of the character, right? So yeah, obviously, there is a choice on the show, and there is an actual choice this year. But that’s actually a very natural progression from Homelander’s perspective, because we’ve been dabbling in politics and trying to get into the military since season one. So there have always been those elements that parallel the real world. But I feel like they always tie in well with the show. It’s not like we just, oh yeah, we want to throw that in for no reason other than to poke fun at something in the real world,” Starr added.

New episodes of The Boys season 4 are available starting Thursdays on Prime Video.
