Taylor Swift is probably the biggest pop star of our time. In two weeks she will be coming to Gelsenkirchen with her “Eras Tour”. The city is now paying her a special tribute.
The city of Gelsenkirchen will be the venue for superstar Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” in July – and is giving itself a new name in honor of the musician. To mark the singer’s three concerts, the Ruhr area city received a new sign with the title “Swiftkirchen”. In the middle of the city center, the sign will welcome the tens of thousands of the musician’s fans who are expected in the city around the shows on July 17, 18 and 19.
The sign was unveiled by Swift fan Aleshanee Westhoff from Emmerich. The student started a petition a few weeks ago and suggested the name. Mayor Karin Welge responded with a letter of thanks and wrote: “It’s a great idea to temporarily rename Gelsenkirchen to ‘Swiftkirchen’.”
Because of Taylor Swift concerts: Many more surprises planned
Several more place-name signs “at highly frequented locations in Gelsenkirchen” should follow in the coming days, as city spokesman Markus Schwardtmann announced.
The city says it has prepared even more for the fans: a “Taylor Swift tram” from Bogestra is already running. The US singer will also receive her own stone on Gelsenkirchen’s Walk of Fame in the Buer district – alongside celebrities such as Schalke legend Rudi Assauer and writer Ilse Kibgis. Gelsenkirchen will then be hosting an open-air party “Taylor Town” with karaoke in the city center around the concerts.
Further actions should remain secret for the time being. “There will be many small and large surprises so that the Swifties in Gelsenkirchen have a lot to discover,” said Schwardtmann.

Taylor’s new clothes: The singer surprises with new looks for her European tour
Swift’s concerts in Gelsenkirchen are the start of the German part of the “Eras Tour”. The sold-out shows will take place in the Veltins Arena in Schalke, and up to 70,000 so-called Swifties are expected in the arena each evening. Further shows will follow in Hamburg and Munich.
