Peter Bradshaw gave the film just two stars in his review for The Guardian. He wrote: “The film moves at a slow pace and, apart from a few mildly entertaining moments, keeps you guessing as to when and if it will be interesting.”
However, in a more positive review, Robbie Collin of The Telegraph gave it four stars and wrote: “The film is serious but hopeful, with sharply drawn characters, but perhaps its full greatness is not fully realised until the second part.”
Despite mostly negative reviews, The film received a seven-minute long standing ovation at Cannesleaving Costner visibly emotional.
