Kida Khodr Ramadan: “4 Blocks” star to begin prison sentence

Kida Khodr Ramadan has had trouble with the justice system several times in the past because of traffic offenses. Now he has to go to prison. So far, he has been fighting against the prison sentence without success.

“4 Blocks” star Kida Khodr Ramadan is to go to prison. He has been summoned “to begin his sentence immediately within fourteen days,” a spokesman for the Berlin public prosecutor’s office said in response to a request. The 47-year-old was sentenced to ten months in prison in Berlin in February 2022 as a traffic offender – initially on probation. However, this was revoked. Ramadan received a summons to begin his prison sentence at the beginning of the year. He resisted this using various means – so far in vain.

The spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office was unable to say when exactly the actor will have to go to prison. The reason for the conviction was 33 cases in which Ramadan was caught driving without a license. According to his defense attorney Kai Walden, the fact that Ramadan should be imprisoned for this – contrary to what was initially planned – is due to a formal error.

Kida Khodr Ramadan: Petition for clemency filed

The Hamburg lawyer has been representing the actor for several months and has tried in various ways to prevent the prison sentence. Most recently, he has filed a petition for clemency on behalf of his client. The Berlin Senate Justice Administration has yet to decide on this. However, this process has no suspensive effect, according to the public prosecutor’s office.

Walden told the German Press Agency that he had therefore submitted an application for a temporary suspension of the execution. In his view, there are “significant grounds for clemency due to the illegality of the probation revocation order,” among other things. The “public interest does not require immediate execution.” The Senate Justice Administration must now decide on this.

However, if from a legal perspective all legal remedies have been exhausted and are unsuccessful, Ramadan will “of course” face the summons, said the defense attorney. “In this respect, he is not claiming any special rights for himself,” said Walden.

Further conviction not yet final

Despite the conviction, which is now set to send Ramadan to prison, the actor again attracted attention in 2023 for traffic offenses. At the end of February, the Tiergarten District Court sentenced him again for intentionally driving without a license – this time directly to a prison sentence of ten months. Since the 47-year-old already had a relevant criminal record, the Tiergarten District Court did not impose a suspended sentence. It also imposed a one-year driving license suspension.

Both Ramadan and the public prosecutor have appealed against the verdict. The prosecution had requested a total sentence of 14 months in prison. The defense had requested a suspended sentence.

Made famous by “4 Blocks”

In “4 Blocks,” Ramadan played the head of a criminal clan of Arab origin in Berlin-Neukölln, who has to deal with murder, violence, drug deals, other gangsters and investigators from the State Criminal Police Office. The award-winning series was his breakthrough as an actor. The seven-part ARD series “Testo,” in which he is the lead actor, co-author and co-director, premiered at the beginning of the year.
