With “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, Cyndi Lauper sang against sexism in 1983. Even more than 40 years later, the singer criticizes being belittled as a woman.
Pop legend Cyndi Lauper is bothered by questions about her age. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” she said that the question comes up frequently. “It’s like a box that you’re put in, and then people have certain ideas about how you should behave in it: At this age you have to do this and that.”
When Lauper is asked about her age, she answers: “What do you think I am, a car?” It should be about the art and not about age. Asking about it is sexism. “Age is a category that is used to keep us small.”
Cyndi Lauper comes to Germany for two concerts
She also criticized sexism in her 1983 hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”: “When women want to have fun, they are quickly labeled. It’s different for men.”
In February next year, Lauper will be coming to Düsseldorf and Berlin for two concerts with her “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour”. She told the “Rheinische Post” that she doesn’t want to go on any more big arena tours after that. Instead, she wants to work on a Broadway musical.
