The history of the Ducal Palace of Modena
According to tradition, the Palace was supervised by Gian Lorenzo Bernini himself. Its impressive Baroque façade is adorned with several statues, including a representation of Hercules. Passing through its majestic doors, you enter its impressive Courtyard of Honour. However, the real gem is on the upper levels: an extraordinary collection of paintings will fascinate any visitor, along with the magnificent ceiling fresco in the Great Hall or Golden Hall.
The Ducal Palace of Modena has played a crucial role over the centuries: Napoleon Bonaparte and Josephine spent a night there. (and they took the opportunity to take some works of art), while during the Second World War it was the headquarters of the Nazis in Emilia Romagna.
Since the end of the war, the building has housed the city’s military academy, so four centuries later this extraordinary construction remains one of the fundamental pillars of the city.
