With just over 300 inhabitants, La Carolina is at the foot of the Tomolasta Hillat an altitude of more than 1,600 m above sea level and in the very centre of the San Luis mountain ranges. Two water courses run through the town in a wedge shape, the Río Amarillo and the Río Las Invernadas, which join together to form the Río Grande and give the town its characteristic golden colour, with a gleam of transparency.

It was the epicenter of the gold rush in Argentina during the 18th and 19th centuries, first with the Spanish, then with the English who exhausted the resources of its mountains leaving an environmental liability in the region. The name dates back to 1792, when the then governor Marquis of Sobremonte intervened in the mines and named the place “La Carolina” in honor of King Charles III, to prevent a further wave of adventurers in search of the precious metal.
