The musician campaigns against domestic violence. She is now set to receive a special honour in her hometown of Leeds in northern England.

Musician Melanie Brown – known as Spice Girl Mel B – is to receive an honorary doctorate. A university in Leeds, northern England, wants to honor the 49-year-old. This is to honor both her commitment to victims of domestic violence and her music career, as Leeds Beckett University announced.

“My father would be so proud,” Brown said in a video posted on Instagram and X platforms. She herself was speechless. The musician also attended a course at the university that deals with trauma.

“I didn’t just want to accept an award,” she was quoted as saying in the university’s statement. She wanted to be accepted as a student. She was so proud to have completed the course, Brown wrote on Instagram. She wants to help many more women with the organization Women’s Aid.

Brown reported on her own experiences in her biography “Brutally Honest”. She accuses her ex-husband of abusive behavior, but he denied the allegations. Two years ago she received a royal honor, the “Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire”. Brown became famous in the 1990s with the Spice Girls (“Wannabe”).
