Three years after the tragedy on the set of “Rust,” Alec Baldwin has to defend himself in court. He was able to achieve partial success before the trial began.
His lawyers had long tried to protect Alec Baldwin from a trial. In vain. On October 21, 2021, the actor shot camerawoman Halyna Hutchins on the set of the western “Rust” with a revolver that was loaded with live ammunition instead of harmless cartridges. Arms master Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has already been found guilty, and now Alec Baldwin must answer in court in Santa Fe. The prosecution accuses him of negligent homicide. Baldwin faces up to one and a half years in prison. Jury selection begins on Tuesday, with opening statements following on Wednesday.
Alec Baldwin in court: partial success for actor
Baldwin repeatedly emphasized that he did not pull the trigger of the revolver. In a major TV interview, he also protested his innocence and his ignorance of the conditions on the set. The filmmaker was able to celebrate a small partial success even before the jury’s selection.
The judge in charge, Mary Marlowe Sommer, ruled that Baldwin’s role as co-producer of the film was not relevant to the trial. The jury should not be informed about it. “I have real difficulties with the prosecution’s position that he, as a producer, did not follow the guidelines and therefore, as an actor, did all these things wrong that led to Ms. Hutchins’ death because he, as a producer, allowed these things to happen,” said the judge. “I reject the evidence of his status as a producer.”

The prosecution had argued that, as co-producer of the film, Baldwin should have known about the safety precautions. Reports about the conditions on the set were already in the works shortly after the tragedy. One day before Hutchins’ death, six crew members had resigned because they felt the safety precautions were inadequate, and payments were delayed.
