Horror when women walk around topless. Censorship when breasts are shown on social networks: Can there be an appropriate way to deal with breasts? A 3sat documentary looks into this.
What is the problem with women’s breasts? The science documentary “Liberated Breasts. Bone of Discord, Object of Desire, Mystery of Evolution” begins with this question, which is at least the most important one for society. It can be seen on Wednesday (July 11) at 8:15 p.m. on 3sat and in the station’s media library. Why hide the female breast under clothing and not just show it off in the same way that men sometimes walk around topless outside?
“A completely toxic relationship with his body”
Activists therefore simply do it – in swimming pools, in the climbing hall, in any place where men sometimes walk around without a shirt. Because it is also more comfortable to take off the top when it is warm, says Aya from the initiative “Equal Breasts for All Dresden” in the documentary.
“And depending on how you grew up, you either don’t worry about it at all because you were always allowed to take your top off when you were warm,” Aya describes. “Or you’re like most people socialized as women, in that you’re in the social situation: you’re not allowed to do that.” For her, the consequence of this feeling can be “a completely toxic relationship with one’s body,” says the activist.
The 3sat documentary examines the shame of one’s own naked breasts, the taboos, sexualization and censorship, with a variety of expert opinions. A psychologist, a sexologist, a nipple artist and a woman who has had a breast amputation offer their thoughts on the subject.
Explaining in a de-stigmatizing way
But there are also scientific explanations given by a doctor and a human biologist – for example, what the differences are between male and animal breasts. Why female breasts look the way they do. How they can be optimally stimulated. And why they developed in the course of evolution.
Almost all explanations come from women, the breasts shown are diverse and staged in a pleasant, non-sexualizing way. The science documentary “Liberated Breasts. Bone of Discord, Object of Desire, Mystery of Evolution” thus reaches viewers with a calm and factual explanation – doing justice to a topic that affects the intimate sphere of many people. Almost removing taboos.
