One of the sagas of films most successful animated films of all time will have a fifth installment: ”Shrek 5” It was officially confirmed by Dreamworksstudy responsible for ”Madagascar” and ”Kung Fu Panda”among others.

Through social network X, Dreamworks confirmed that the release date will not be until 2026, so fans of the saga will have to wait a long time to see the ogre on the big screen again: ”Not far, far away…@ Shrek 5 will hit theaters on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz.”
Walt Dohrn (Trolls), who worked on the second and third films as a writer and artist and as head of story on the fourth film, will direct the fifth installment.
A more than successful saga
Last month, Murphy hinted that the project was underway in an interview: ”We started making Shrek four or five months ago,” he said. “I recorded the first act and we will do it this year. We will finish it.”. In that interview, Murphy let slip that his character Donkey, the faithful companion of the ogre Shrek (Mike Myers), will also have its own spin-off(film or series derived from an existing one).
The DreamWorks animated franchise is based on the 1990 picture book by writer-cartoonist William Steig. It all began with a 2001 film of the same name, which introduced Shrek, an ogre who embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz).
The next movie, Shrek 2 (2004)is when the protagonist meets Fiona’s parents, and Shrek the Third (2007)follows Shrek’s journey to find the next heir to the throne. The fourth installment, Shrek Forever After (2010)explores Shrek’s midlife crisis and his desire to erase his past. The franchise also includes the spin-off Puss in Boots (2011)made by Antonio Banderas like the bold feline, whose sequel (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) was nominated for an Oscar and grossed over $481 million worldwide in its debut in December 2022.
The four previous films from Shrek grossed more than $2.9 billion worldwide, spawning a live world-touring spectacular, an award-winning Broadway musical that garnered eight Tony Award nominations and 12 Drama Desk nominations, a world-class immersive destination in London and popular events and attractions at Universal Destinations & Experiences theme parks.
