George Clooney calls on Joe Biden to withdraw from the election: “It’s an age issue”

George Clooneya lifelong Democrat and prominent donor to Joe Bidenjoined the growing chorus of those calling for the president to step aside to make way for another candidate in this year’s election in a New York Times op-ed on Wednesday.

“The only battle you can’t win is the fight against time”“None of us can. It’s devastating to say, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the Joe Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all saw at the debate.”

“With this president, we are not going to win in November,” the actor added. “Also, we are not going to win the House of Representatives and we are going to lose the Senate.”

George Clooney joins other figures in calling for Joe Biden’s candidacy

Clooney said he is one of many who hold this belief, including senators, members of Congress and governors he has spoken to privately since the debate. “Every single one, regardless of what they say publicly,” he said.

She also mentioned the intense concerns about Biden’s age, highlighting her past experience with the president at other fundraisers over the years, writing: “Is it fair to point these things out? It has to be. It’s about age. Nothing more. But also nothing that can be reversed.”

Clooney recently participated in a fundraiser for the Biden-Harris campaign, using his participation in a low-income voter contest to win a chance to attend the fundraiser and meet the actor and others. The event raised millions of dollars for Biden’s re-election campaign, making it the most successful fundraiser in Democratic Party history.

Now, after what he saw from the president that night, his debate performance and the interviews that followed, Clooney is calling for Biden to drop out of the race.

“The top Democrats —Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, Nancy Pelosi— and senators, representatives and other candidates who are at risk of losing in November should ask this president to step aside voluntarily,” Clooney urged.

The actor also mentioned high-profile Democrats such as Vice President Kamala Harris and the governors Gretchen Whitmer and Gavin Newsom among those I could see stepping forward and defending the nomination.

“Would it be chaos? Yes. Democracy is chaos,” Clooney continued. “But would it galvanize our party and awaken voters who, long before the June debate, had already turned away? Surely.”

“Joe Biden is a hero, he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024,” she concluded.
