Cinema summer: “Familie is nich” opens the German Film Festival

Ludwigshafen is considered the German film festival with the most visitors after the Berlinale. This year’s opening film has now been announced. The well-known leading actress will be attending the screening.

The tragicomedy “Familie is nich” by Nana Neul will open the 20th German Film Festival in Ludwigshafen on August 21. This was announced by the organizers in the second largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate. The film festival is considered an important industry meeting point. Until September 8, 64 productions will be presented in tent cinemas and an open-air cinema on an island in the Rhine near the border with Baden-Württemberg. Eleven of these will compete for the film art prizes, which are awarded by a jury in several categories.

Festival director Michael Kötz described “Familie is nich”, which is celebrating its world premiere in Ludwigshafen, as a highly topical film. “Because it tells the story of the merely superficial resignation of the parents’ generation and the zest for life of the young, with great love for its characters,” said Kötz. “That’s why it is the ideal opening film for the next 19 days of cinematic journey through the world.”

Actress Meret Becker (“Babylon Berlin”), who is expected to attend the opening like director Neul, is among those taking part in “Familie is nich”. According to the organizers, around 108,000 people came to the German Film Festival last year. This means that Ludwigshafen is still the German film festival with the most visitors after the Berlinale, they said. Before the corona pandemic, the show on the Parkinsel in the Rhine had around 120,000 visitors – in the premiere year of 2005, there were around 7,000.
