Winona Ryder: Her past heartbreak makes her sad

Winona Ryder takes a look at her love life in her thirties. She apparently regrets two of her past relationships in retrospect.

Actress Winona Ryder (52) looks back on a successful career and some turbulent relationships with other famous actors. Looking back, she has now expressed doubts about her previous love decisions. “In my 30s, I had two disastrous relationships that weren’t wrong, but that was before you even thought about Googling someone,” she says.

“What was I thinking?”

When she looks back today, she often asks herself: “What the hell was I thinking?” She was with the type of man “who you only find out after a few weeks is actually in a relationship with someone else.” At that time, she wrote a lot in her diary and only recently read through her notes from back then. I definitely write more when I’m depressed or unhappy. I tend not to write when I’m really happy,” says the now 52-year-old.

When she read the diaries, she realized that she was just trying to cope. “It was very sad. I definitely tried to believe in the best and be kind to myself. But I was concerned about everything else except myself.”

In the interview, Ryder left it unclear which two relationships from her past she was referring to. At the beginning of her career, she was in a relationship with fellow actor Johnny Depp (61), with whom she celebrated her breakthrough in Tim Burton’s film “Edward Scissorhands”. The relationship, including engagement, lasted from 1990 to 1993. After that, Ryder was in a relationship with singer Dave Pirner (60) from 1993 to 1996, with Matt Damon (53) from 1997 to 2000, and with guitarist Blake Sennett (50) from 2007 to 2008.

Happy with her partner for 14 years

The “Stranger Things” actress has been happily married to fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn for 14 years. The two met at the premiere of “Black Swan” in 2010. “He’s great. He really is. I’m so lucky,” Ryder says of her partner.
