Former US President Donald Trump (78) was injured by gunfire during a campaign appearance in Pennsylvania on Saturday (July 13). He was escorted off the stage by security personnel, bleeding from his ear.

The district attorney of Butler County – where the rally took place – said Trump was “grazed” by the gunfire. Richard Goldinger also confirmed that both the shooter and an event-goer are dead. Two other people were injured, according to the Secret Service.

“I thought it was fireworks”

Trump issued a statement on Truth Social following the dramatic incident, saying: “I was hit by a bullet that pierced the top of my right ear. I knew immediately something was wrong as I heard a whooshing sound and gunshots and immediately felt the bullet pierce the skin. It was bleeding profusely and that’s when I realized what was going on.”

In the middle of his speech, popping, gunshot-like sounds were heard. Footage taken at the event and shared on social media shows the former president turning toward the sound and briefly touching his ear before Secret Service agents storm the stage and surround him. One event attendee: “I thought it was fireworks. Pop pop pop. That’s what it sounded like.” , that the shooter fired eight shots.

Trump was then pushed off the stage as blood was seen running down the side of his face. As he left the stage, he raised his fist in a defiant gesture.

As the New York Times further reports, the campaign team and the Republican National Committee have now announced that Trump will attend the Republican Party Convention in Milwaukee, which begins on Monday.
