There always comes a time when children start to ask how they came into the world, and often parents are not very clear on how to do it in a way that is appropriate for their children’s age or are afraid of making a mistake. Winter holidays can be a key time to share different stories with the family and to nourish ourselves with knowledge, and thus take advantage of the leisure and relaxation time that can arise.

In this sense, couples in diverse families that are formed through reproductive techniques also often have questions about how to describe the process using language that is appropriate for the person.

Initially, it is essential to work on removing any prejudices we may have in order to explain our doubts as naturally as possible. This work can be done on a personal level, individually, as a couple, with a professional on the subject and/or using different resources such as fantasy stories that can give us the push we need.
If adults take it naturally and transmit security to them, children will take the situation in the same way, since it is the same adult who shares their own prejudice and fear. Naturalness in the youngest children makes them really know and understand that at home they have two mothers, two fathers, or only the mother or only the father. A family configuration different from others without that meaning that something is missing there.
As explained by the psychologist and member of the Somos Grupo de Mujeres más Association, Lorena Laserre, the use of “simple language” and “elements that children identify as being pleasing” such as colors, fantastic characters, etc., can be key tools to explain the origin. “A pleasant language, in a calm environment where the child pays attention, supported by some playful material or stories, much better due to their more graphic form,” explained the professional.
The professional also shared some of her books that can be a good recreational and educational option to read with the little ones during the holidays:
- “Osa Maia is a mother”: A single female bear decides to become a mother thanks to a sperm donation from a male bear and an egg donation from a female bear.
- “How are dinosaurs born?”: A dinosaur couple needs a donation of an egg and a sperm to have a dino baby.
- “Tina the Penguin”: The story revolves around egg donation. Tina is a penguin, she has her eggs and she wanted them preserved, so another penguin donates these little embryos that she needs and so Tina can have her baby. She wanted to be a mother and she receives this help to become one.
- “My Moms: A Love Story”: It tells the story of two women in love who want to have a child using the ROPA method (Reception of oocytes from the partner).
