The celebrations of the King’s Speech 2024 began on Wednesday with a traditional journey from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Palace, where the British Parliament is located. King Charles and Queen Camilla drove to the Parliament building in the magnificent Diamond Jubilee State Coach. Another carriage brought the royal paraphernalia from the well-secured Tower, including the Imperial State Crown and the Imperial Sword.
Once there, the King went through a special entrance reserved exclusively for him, the “Sovereign’s Entrance”. Invited guests were then waiting in the House of Lords. Charles and Camilla each sat on a golden throne. Sitting on the throne, the reigning monarch then delivered the King’s Speech. A traditional speech that is given at the ceremonial opening of Parliament. This speech from the throne serves to reveal government policy and legislative proposals for the coming session.
King Charles reads out the government programme
In the government programme for the coming session, Prime Minister Starmer’s new Labour government plans to make reducing the rising cost of living in England a priority of its work.
In addition, the rights of employees, such as continued payment of wages in the event of illness and unjustified dismissals, are to be revised in order to give the people more security. King Charles also read out planned reforms to speed up the approval process for infrastructure projects and to be able to build more housing in a shorter time. The new government program generally includes around twenty different points. King Charles reads the speech in the first person, for example, he said: “My government will continue to strengthen Ukraine.”
Members of both houses of parliament take part in the traditional speech in the House of Lords in London. After the speech, the members of parliament return to their respective houses to debate the content of the speech. The Labour Party replaces the Conservatives as the governing party after 14 years.
The King’s Speech is a significant event in the UK political calendar as it sets out the government’s priorities and plans for the coming year. It also provides an opportunity for the opposition and other MPs to debate and criticise those plans. Overall, the King’s Speech is a central element of the British parliamentary tradition and a major political speech that presents the government’s legislative agenda.
