Selma Blair has been living with the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis for many years. Now, at the age of 52, she has found new love.
In 2018, actress Selma Blair (52) made it public that she suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS). Since then, she has been open about her illness. She now talks about how the diagnosis has helped her to be happier. And also reveals that there is a new man in her life.
“Once I knew I had MS – and I had it for quite a while – things made so much more sense. I actually became happier,” Blair reflects. “For years I had these twitches and spasms and I would try to suppress them and keep moving or drink excessive amounts of alcohol to prevent major attacks that I thought were psychological.”
Drinking alcohol to avoid stuttering
Before she received the diagnosis, the “Cruel Intentions” actress thought she was very broken inside. “I didn’t know that I wasn’t broken and that I had brain tissue damage.” She lived a lie for many years because she didn’t know that she was ill. “I convinced myself that I was this dramatic, strange girl who needed alcohol to stop herself from stuttering. I could have been kinder to myself.”
With the diagnosis, she realized that many other sick people were in a similar situation. “Dealing honestly with the diagnosis and coming out has really enriched my life.” It makes her happy to give other people hope.
For years she had problems with alcohol because of her undiagnosed illness. However, Selma Blair has been sober since 2016. “Without being sober, I would not have been able to get the MS diagnosis.” She now has a “very small group of people” that she can always rely on. “One of them is [die Schauspielerin] Jaime King. She’s my best friend,” said Selma Blair.
There is a new man in her life
She also has a new partner at her side: “He’s not in the film business, although he used to produce. I wanted a man from the Midwest and I found a real man from the Midwest.” She believes that it’s best for relationships to be kept out of the public eye. “Nobody likes to be subjected to scrutiny. But yes, it is possible to find love at 52.”
Selma Blair no longer wants to get married
However, she rules out marriage: “When you’re a mother trying to juggle everything, when you want to build a career and find out when you’re going to get your blood treatments – a boyfriend can quickly fall by the wayside. That’s why I would never want to get married. That’s a big risk of failure.”
From 2004 to 2006, Selma Blair was married to the US musician, actor and author Ahmet Zappa (50). Her son Arthur (*2011) comes from her relationship with fashion designer Jason Bleick (54).
