Tens of thousands of Swift fans are out and about in Gelsenkirchen. An American is fished out at the entrance control – and remains in custody until the megastar has left North Rhine-Westphalia.
During the entrance control for the first Taylor Swift concert in Gelsenkirchen, an American was identified as a suspected stalker and taken into custody. The 34-year-old had previously attracted attention by making threats against the singer and her partner on social media.
“The threats were so massive that danger to both people could not be ruled out,” said a police spokesman the day after the first of three Swift shows in the Ruhr area city. The Gelsenkirchen district court ordered “long-term detention to avert danger” until Saturday. “The suspect will remain in custody until Ms. Swift has safely left North Rhine-Westphalia.”
The police spokesman did not say what the threats were specifically. But they should be taken seriously. The 34-year-old had a ticket for the show on Wednesday. He explained his side of things during questioning. The man will be released on Saturday.
According to the police, the concert on Wednesday evening was a peaceful event with around 60,000 visitors. “At no time was there any danger to the artist or the visitors to the concert.”
US megastar Taylor Swift (34) is planning two more performances in Gelsenkirchen on Thursday and Friday. Further concerts are in Germany in Hamburg and Munich.
