On July 13, Shannen Doherty died at the age of 53. Her “Beverly Hills, 90210” colleagues are deeply affected by the loss.
“Beverly Hills, 90210” actress Jennie Garth (52) has recorded the first episode of her podcast after the death of Shannen Doherty (1971-2024) and dedicated it to her former colleague. In it, she spoke about her co-stars’ reactions to the sad news on July 13.
The actors of the series shared their grief in a group chat. “Jason Priestley was of course the first to turn to everyone and say: ‘I love you and this is crazy. Please no more loss,'” revealed Garth.
“The strongest woman”
Jennie Garth herself, who played the role of Kelly Taylor in “Beverly Hills, 90210” alongside Doherty, said she felt “like someone had punched me in the stomach” after hearing the news of her death. “I was angry – angry at her circumstances, at the cancer. At the world for taking her away from her mother, her family and her dog,” she recalled.
Of course, like everyone else, the American knew about the actress’ serious illness – but deep down she always believed that she would get well again. “I thought she would make it. She is the strongest woman there is and I never thought this would happen,” explained Garth. Shannen Doherty had been battling breast cancer for ten years, and the metastases had also spread to other parts of her body.
The second death on “Beverly Hills, 90210”
In the podcast, Jeannie Garth also mentioned that Shannen Doherty is already the second death from the main cast of the hit series. Luke Perry (1966-2019) died of a heart attack. “One of the hardest parts for me is that it’s now two people from our original cast,” said Garth.
She always sees a group photo of the cast, which also includes Brian Austin Green (51), Ian Ziering (60), Gabrielle Carteris (63) and Tori Spelling (51), “and when you imagine the image of that person in the group photo fading and disappearing. I just can’t quite grasp it.”
