Donald Trump: An oh-so-American clan

Donald Trump wants to become president again. His family supports him in this endeavor – from his wife Melania to his granddaughter Kai.

Donald Trump (78) is many things: former president and renewed Republican hope for the upcoming US election, entrepreneur, media personality and probably also a true underdog, at least if it’s up to him. He presents himself as one of them – as a real American, whose stories sometimes exude more than just a hint of the rags-to-riches dream that many seem to be so fascinated by.

The difficult life of Donald Trump

Trump wants to continue to make the USA “great again” after his first term in office. As great as the story of an allegedly disadvantaged boy from New York City who was born in the summer of 1946 into a family that allegedly never took his side. In , his entire life was one big “no” that he fought his way through.

“It wasn’t easy for me,” the future US president explained. His father only gave him “a small loan of a million dollars” and he later had to pay it back with interest. When it was pointed out that for many people this probably sounds like a fairly easy way to start an entrepreneur, Trump justified himself by saying: “You’re right, but a million dollars is not very much compared to what I’ve built.”

What Trump has undoubtedly built up over the past few years with his frequent sledgehammer rhetoric is a following that does not hold any offence against him or claims, no matter how unlikely they may seem – or apparently even questions them. The Republican presidential candidate is celebrated by millions of people, and not just in the USA. At the US Republican Party Convention, Trump’s clan was also in the spotlight. After all, the impression of a family man certainly goes down well with conservative fans.

The First Lady and son Barron

The current wife of “The Donald”, former First Lady Melania Trump (54), appeared at the party conference hand in hand with her husband. It was an appearance by the former model, born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, at her husband’s side, which has become rare in recent years. A sign of family unity to the outside world.

Melania, who moved to the USA in the 1990s, is the politician’s third wife. The two first met in 1998, they married in 2005 and the following year their son Barron (18) was born, whom she is said to have called “little Donald” at least a few years ago, according to media reports. Unlike Trump’s other children, Barron apparently does not feel a great need to be in the public eye, or his mother Melania does not let him – not even at the party convention, where the others showed up to support their father.

The first marriage and the famous children

In his first marriage, the former president was married to Ivana Trump (1949-2022), a former Czech model who died around two years ago. Ivana Trump moved to North America in the 1970s. She initially lived in Canada before meeting her future husband in 1976. They were married in 1977, but despite having three children together, the marriage was not to last. The New York Times reported in the spring of 1991 that the two parties had reached an agreement in a public divorce battle and that she was to receive, among other things, 14 million US dollars and a 45-room villa.

The marriage produced the three most famous Trump children: Donald Trump Jr. (46), Ivanka Trump (42) and Eric Trump (40), who, in keeping with family tradition, soon demonstrated entrepreneurial and political ambitions. After graduating and several stops along the way, Donald Jr. soon ended up in the Trump Organization, his father’s company. In political terms, he is considered a great supporter of Donald Trump. In 2020, he was described as the “son who is even Trumpier than Trump”. He has five children with his ex-wife Vanessa (46): Kai Madison, Donald John, Tristan Milos, Spencer Frederick and Chloe Sophia.

Daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner (43) even assisted the 45th President of the USA in official advisory positions during his term in office. The entrepreneurs, who have been married since 2009, have three children together: Arabella Rose, Joseph Frederick and Theodore James. His son Eric, who has been jointly responsible for managing the Trump Organization with his brother Donald Jr. for several years, gave him two more children, and thus grandchildren nine and ten for Donald Trump. The latter has been married to former TV producer and fellow staunch Republican Lara Trump (41) since 2014, and has given birth to their children Luke and Carolina.

The second marriage and the “forgotten daughter”

Not long after his divorce from Ivanka, Trump married actress Marla Maples (60) in 1993. Although she did not achieve great fame in Hollywood, the relationship did put her in the spotlight of the tabloid press, especially at the beginning. The divorce took place in 1999.

The couple’s relationship produced a daughter, Tiffany Trump (30), who is the political wallflower among the half-siblings. She has received significantly less attention than the others in recent years, which is probably also due to the fact that she has made fewer campaign appearances. She was notorious as a party girl and was sometimes described as the “forgotten daughter”. Tiffany also now has , but no comparison to the current total of around . How relatively plain, considering that she is said to be named after the internationally known luxury jeweler Tiffany & Co.

The next generation: Trump’s star granddaughter Kai

The next generation of Trumps is ready. Donald Trump Jr. recently welcomed his daughter Kai Madison to the party convention stage. The 17-year-old reportedly called him and said of her own accord that she really wanted to speak to let America know what her grandfather was really like.

In the short appearance, the politician’s eldest granddaughter painted a picture of a loving grandfather who, among other things, gives the children candy when their parents aren’t looking. Republican supporters celebrated Kai’s speech, which explicitly referred to being “a Trump,” as moving. Others mocked that the 78-year-old probably doesn’t even know his granddaughter’s name.

One thing became clear from Kai’s appearance: Thanks to the Trumps’ many business, political and media efforts, things will not be quiet for the clan any time soon, no matter how the upcoming US election turns out.
