Harvey Weinstein will be back in court on November 12. A judge has set the date for the start of the new trial on Friday.
Harvey Weinstein (72) will have to appear in court again on November 12th. The date for the resumption of the rape trial against the fallen Hollywood mogul was set by a judge on Friday (July 19th) during a hearing in a court in Manhattan. This is reported by several US media outlets, .
12 November set as provisional date
Most recently, at another hearing in early July, November was announced as the likely date for the start of the new trial. However, the prosecution stated that the investigation had not yet been completed, which is why the findings could not yet be presented to a grand jury. November 12th has now been set as a provisional date. The judge also stated that an earlier start date was possible if the preparations could be completed more quickly.
Weinstein was also present in the New York courtroom on Friday. He wore a suit and glasses and sat in a wheelchair. The 72-year-old has been suffering from health problems for some time.
Verdict against Weinstein overturned
In 2020, a New York court sentenced former film producer Weinstein to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault. But in April 2023, New York State’s Supreme Court overturned the verdict. The reasoning was that the judge had allowed testimony from women who were not victims of the charges but who testified negatively about Weinstein. However, these statements were irrelevant to the case and could have influenced the jury.
Despite the Supreme Court’s overturning of the verdict, Weinstein remains in custody. In 2022, he was convicted again of sex crimes in another trial in Los Angeles. In early 2023, the sentence was set at 16 years in prison.
