Brad Pitt’s daughter: Shiloh Jolie applies for name change in newspaper

A newspaper advert in which Shiloh Jolie (formerly Pitt) announced her name change caused astonishment. Now the lawyer for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter has explained what is behind it and defended his client.

Shiloh Jolie no longer wanted to be called Pitt, but just like her mother Angelina Jolie. The news is not new, but the way the 18-year-old dealt with the decision recently caused surprise.

Shiloh made her wishes known in a newspaper ad in the Los Angeles Times. What sounds at least surprising is normal practice under California law, as her lawyer Peter Levine explains to Page Six. “Shiloh Jolie has not placed an ‘ad’ announcing a name change, and all press reports claiming this are inaccurate,” he said.

Shiloh Jolie (formerly Pitt) submits name request

“As Shiloh’s attorney, I am required to publish a legal notice because California law requires this of anyone seeking to change their name. This legal notice was published in the Los Angeles Times, as required,” he explained.

Announce a name change in a newspaper? This is a very public procedure, especially for celebrities or, in this case, celebrity children. According to the California court, people seeking a name change have the following task: “The court requires you to publish your petition in the classified section of a newspaper.(…) You must publish the petition in a generally accessible newspaper that publishes legal notices in the county in which you will file your case (the county in which you reside). Check with the court in which you will file your case to see if there is a list of newspapers you can choose from,” the official website states.

Lawyer explains her step

The ad is not free for the applicant, the prices vary depending on the newspaper. Levine warned “Page Six” against inaccurate reporting. Especially when it concerns younger people and children or someone who “has made an independent and important decision after painful events and is simply pursuing a legal process,” said Levine.

Why Shiloh Jolie and her lawyer chose the “Los Angeles Times”, one of the most widely read daily newspapers in the USA, is not known.
