From Springfield to the White House: Kamala Harris’ rise to president was already addressed in the cult series “Simpsons” in 2000.
The comic series “The Simpsons” staged Kamala Harris as US President 24 years ago. A corresponding meme is currently going viral after US President Joe Biden (81) resigned from an extension of his term in office on Sunday (July 21) and his deputy Harris (59) nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate for the election in November.
Attentive social media users on X had drawn attention to the reference in the popular cartoon because a 2000 episode of “The Simpsons” shows the fictional President Lisa Simpson in a purple suit similar to the one worn by Vice President Harris during Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021. The cult show’s showrunner, Al Jean (63), posted the current political prophecy himself, saying: “The Simpsons prediction: I’m proud to be part of it.”
Coincidence or future?
One user summed up the meme as: “The Simpsons have done it again! Here’s Lisa Simpson as the first female President of the United States from episode 17 of season 11 (in 2000) talking about how the country is broken after President Trump. And next to her is Kamala wearing the same outfit at Biden’s inauguration.”
At the inauguration of US President Joe Biden on January 20, 2021, Kamala Harris, the first woman and first black person to be sworn in as US Vice President, was dressed in a purple ensemble by Christopher John Rogers, paired with shoes designed by Sergio Hudson and a pearl necklace by Wilfredo Rosado.
Not the only accurate forecast
In the episode “Bart to the Future,” Lisa Simpson is chosen as the successor to Donald Trump as US President, whom the format had already predicted to be President in 2000. In 2016, TV writer Dan Greaney explained to “The Hollywood Reporter” magazine how the yellow cartoon series’ accurate Trump prediction came about. “It was a warning to America,” he explained. The Trump presidency “was the last stop before the absolute rock bottom. We picked it out because it seemed to be in line with a vision of a completely crazy America.”
That’s what the “Simpsons” episode was about
In the episode “Bart to the Future,” the Simpson family visits a Native American casino, which Bart, at ten years old, is too young for. He then thinks about the future in 30 years: Lisa will be elected president – after Donald Trump’s term in office. In her role as president, Lisa emphasizes in the episode: “As you know, we inherited quite a budget shortage from President Trump.”
