Film Festival: “Joker” sequel at the Venice Film Festival

Film Festival: “Joker” sequel at the Venice Film Festival

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, as well as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, are among the Hollywood stars expected at this year’s Venice Film Festival. A German documentary is being shown out of competition.

The sequel to the award-winning work “Joker” with Joaquin Phoenix will premiere at the Venice Film Festival. In addition to Phoenix, who won the Oscar for Best Actor for the first part in 2020, Lady Gaga can be seen in a leading role in “Joker: Folie à Deux”. Todd Phillips again directed the film. In 2019, the first part of “Joker” won the main prize in Venice.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie represented with films

The film festival will take place from August 28 to September 7. Former couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are expected in Venice with separate films. Jolie plays the lead role in “Maria”, a drama by Pablo Larraín about the opera singer Maria Callas. The film is in competition.

“Wolfs” will be shown out of competition: Jon Watts’ new film brings Brad Pitt and George Clooney back together in front of the camera.

Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman and Jude Law in competition films

21 films will compete for the festival’s main prize, the Golden Lion. Among them is Pedro Almodóvar’s new film, “The Room Next Door” with Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.

Also part of the competition is “Queer”, the new film by Luca Guadagnino. It stars Daniel Craig and Jason Schwartzman. Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson and Antonio Banderas are part of “Babygirl” by director Halina Reijn.

Adrien Brody and Joe Alwyn star in “The Brutalist,” Brady Corbet’s new drama. Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult star in “The Order,” a thriller by Justin Kurzel.

Documentary about Leni Riefenstahl out of competition

There is also a German production outside of the competition: the documentary film “Riefenstahl” by Andres Veiel. The director and screenwriter will soon be publishing a book about research into Riefenstahl’s estate.

Riefenstahl (1902-2003) became both famous and notorious, especially with the controversial propaganda film about the Nazi Party Rally in Nuremberg in 1934 (“Triumph of the Will”).

Opening with Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton

The festival opens with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” – the sequel to the legendary horror comedy from 1988. The work by Tim Burton, again starring Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, opens the festival out of competition.

After significantly fewer film stars than usual traveled to Venice last year due to the Hollywood strike, it can be assumed that all of the celebrities involved will come to Italy again this year.
