Death: Blues musician John Mayall dies at the age of 90

British blues musician John Mayall has died. The “Godfather of British Blues” died on Monday at the age of 90 in his adopted home of California surrounded by his family, a spokeswoman confirmed. The multi-instrumentalist died as a result of health problems. “For 90 years, John Mayall worked tirelessly to educate, inspire and entertain,” the post continued.

Since the 1960s, John Mayall has shaped the blues like few other British musicians. Over the decades, many stars played in the band he founded, The Bluesbreakers, including Eric Clapton and the later Fleetwood Mac musicians Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. The influential British multi-instrumentalist and bandleader toured regularly well into old age before stepping down in 2022. Mayall turned 90 on November 29, 2023.

The blues musician was awarded the Order of the British Empire at Buckingham Palace in 2005 and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2016. His private life was a little more stable than the line-up of his Bluesbreakers. Mayall was married twice and had six children.
