If Kamala Harris (59) were elected US President in November, she would not only be the first woman to lead the country, but also the first person without biological children since the 19th century. However, the current Vice President has two adult stepchildren from her marriage to Doug Emhoff (59) – Cole (29) and Ella Emhoff (25). The latter has been no stranger since Harris’ inauguration in January 2021 – and is publicly supporting her stepmother.
Who is Ella Emhoff?
The daughter of Douglas Emhoff and his first wife, film producer Kerstin Emhoff (57), grew up in California. Her parents separated in 2008. Six years later, her father married the then Attorney General of California, Kamala Harris. Her stepchildren lovingly christened her “Momala”.
After high school, Ella Emhoff studied textile design at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. Since then, she has lived in the New York borough of Brooklyn, more precisely Bushwick, and is therefore jokingly called “The First Daughter of Bushwick”. At her graduation in May 2021, Kamala Harris shared: “Congratulations to our daughter Ella on graduating. I am so proud of you. Keep dreaming with ambition and there is nothing you can’t achieve. Love, Momala.”
Emhoff designs and knits colorful clothes and accessories and sells them on her Instagram account. She has more than 320,000 followers there. She is celebrated for her unconventional, natural style – Emhoff has numerous eye-catching tattoos, hardly wears any makeup and doesn’t shave her armpit hair. Emhoff has been in a relationship with “GQ” editor Sam Hine for several years.
Ella Emhoff made her first public appearance in front of a large audience at the Democratic National Convention in August 2020, where she gave a speech on behalf of her stepmother as a candidate for Vice President. She was “the best stepmother in the world,” she said at the time.
Emhoff received further attention at the inauguration of US President Joe Biden (81) and Kamala Harris in January 2021. The now 25-year-old wowed the crowd in a checkered Miu Miu suit and John Lennon glasses. A few days later, she signed a modeling contract with the IMG Models agency. Since then, she has modeled for Prada and Balenciaga, among others. In May 2021, she made her debut at the Met Gala in New York. 2022 was one of its “Icons of the Year”.
Ella Emhoff supports Kamala Harris even now
Even now that Kamala Harris is the likely Democratic candidate for the presidential election in November 2024, she can once again hope for the support of her stepdaughter.
On Monday (July 22), shortly after news of Biden’s resignation and Harris’ possible candidacy broke, Emhoff shared a post in which she wrote “kamala IS brat,” and captioned, “Charli XCX gets it.”
Two days later, Emhoff shared a selfie on her story and called on her followers to register to vote with a link. “Now is not the time to sit back and shirk responsibility,” she wrote. “It’s up to all of us to show up, take action and vote for our future. We can be the change we want to see.”
