Apple TV+ has been around since 2019, but the first German series is only just coming: In “Where’s Wanda?” Heike Makatsch plays a desperate mother. It is scheduled to launch on October 2nd.
On the day before German reunification, the first German-language series from the streaming service Apple TV+ will celebrate its premiere. The so-called dark comedy, starring Heike Makatsch (52) and Axel Stein (42), has the English title “Where’s Wanda?” It will start on October 2nd with two episodes. A new one of the remaining episodes produced by Ufa Fiction will be released every Wednesday until November 13th.
The eight-part series revolves around a couple (Stein and Makatsch) who are desperately searching for their daughter Wanda (Lea Drinda), who disappeared without a trace months ago. When the police fail, the family takes matters into their own hands. The tech-savvy son (Leo Simon) helps with surveillance devices; the neighborhood and half of the suburb are bugged.
The series features all kinds of acting celebrities, including Nikeata Thompson, Palina Rojinski, Kostja Ullmann, Harriet Herbig-Matten, Devid Striesow and Joachim Król.
Apple TV+ (“Ted Lasso”), founded in late 2019, competes as a video-on-demand service with streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.
The first Netflix series to be developed, produced and filmed in Germany was the global hit “Dark” in 2017. On Amazon, the first German series was “You Are Wanted”, a thriller series by and starring Matthias Schweighöfer. On Disney+, “Sam – Ein Sachse” became available in 2023 as the first so-called original series produced in Germany.
