“Kleo” actress Jella Haase experienced the news of Alec Baldwin’s fatal shooting accident as a turning point in her own film work.
Jella Haase (31), star of the trigger-happy Netflix series “Kleo”, was deeply affected by the fatal shot fired by Hollywood star Alec Baldwin during filming. “There is no film set in the whole world where Alec Baldwin’s fatal shot has not been discussed,” Haase told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). “When the news came out, we fought all day on “Kleo”, a very difficult fight scene. And suddenly we were highly sensitized.”
During the filming of the series “Kleo”, the second season of which has been online since Thursday, the security routines were adjusted on the same day, said Haase, who plays a tough former GDR contract killer in “Kleo”. “Back then, we immediately agreed on clear rules: We have to name our limits. We have to say when we are exhausted. We must not overdo anything, especially in fight scenes.”

No one could understand how a mistake like the one on the set of Baldwin’s film “Rust” could even happen. “There are gunsmiths who pay attention to safety. There can be no live ammunition on the set at all,” said Haase. “In every single case in which I am handed a gun, I am shown in detail that it is not loaded. It is unbelievable that this could happen.”
Haase also thinks about violence in films and series in general: When you play it, you ask yourself whether it’s actually okay. “And why a character like that actually gives you so much joy. I think that’s precisely because of the exaggeration. The exaggeration gives the violence something abstract.”
In mid-July, a trial against Alec Baldwin for negligent homicide was surprisingly dropped. In 2021, a camerawoman was fatally shot on the set of the western “Rust” after Baldwin pulled out a revolver during rehearsals, as requested by the director. But instead of harmless blanks, live ammunition went off. One bullet hit the camerawoman Halyna Hutchins. The 42-year-old died of her injuries.
