Olympic champion Britta Steffen is committed to social and ecological projects. The topic of sustainability is particularly close to her heart.
“Swimming, breakdancing and skateboarding” is what Britta Steffen (40) is most looking forward to at the Olympic Games in Paris. But above all, “of course, she is looking forward to the freestyle events and the races in which our swimmers are represented.” The 40-year-old won gold in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
She fights for healthy seas and healthy coasts
Since the end of her career in 2013, Steffen has worked as a career advisor at the Berlin Olympic Training Center and is now a sought-after keynote speaker in the areas of mental strength and sustainability. The former professional swimmer is particularly concerned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: “It’s about healthy oceans and healthy coasts. Plastic is also a big issue. If we use too much plastic, it ends up in the oceans, then in the stomachs of fish and eventually on our plates,” she explains as part of Lightcycle’s awareness-raising initiative “Simply recycle light!”
Together with sports presenter Jochen Breyer (41), she supports the non-profit company that campaigns for the correct disposal of light bulbs. In How easy it is to put old LED lamps back into circulation. Consumers can find a retailer or recycling center in their area where they can hand in their old light bulbs free of charge.
With the birth of her children, her consumption habits have changed
Steffen’s view of sustainability has changed once again since the birth of her children. “I pay even more attention to what you buy for your children, because consumption naturally increases with two children. Not just from a cost perspective, but also from a material perspective.” Steffen now thinks more than before “whether you really need it or whether you can just repair toys and clothes. Consumer behavior has changed even more.”
The 40-year-old became a mother for the second time in the spring. Her son Lennox was born in April, six years after the birth of her first son Quentin. The father of the two is cameraman Lorenz Ackermann, with whom she has been together since 2011. Just a few weeks after the birth of her second son, Steffen was giving lectures again as part of her freelance work.
