Presidential candidate Kamala Harris: The Obamas stand behind her

Kamala Harris can now be sure of the Obamas’ backing. The couple assured her of their support in a phone call.

Now the former presidential couple Barack (62) and Michelle Obama (60) have also publicly supported the presidential candidacy of the Democratic politician Kamala Harris (59). They did not do this with a joint declaration of support on social media, but instead a video was made especially for the “Harris 2024” campaign. The 59-year-old Vice President can see the short clip – but not the Obamas themselves.

In the video, Kamala Harris receives a phone call from the Obamas, which she happily accepts. The former First Lady then says: “I can’t make this phone call without telling my girl Kamala that I’m proud of you. This is going to be historic.” Her husband Barack immediately agrees: “We’re calling to say that Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to support you, to guide you through this election and to get you into the Oval Office.”

Harris replied that the support meant the world to her. “The words you have said and the friendship you have given me over the years mean more to me than I can express. Thank you both. […] And we’ll have a little fun, too, won’t we?”

Public support from the Obamas was slow in coming

After Joe Biden’s (81) withdrawal from the election campaign, other politicians and prominent supporters of the US Democrats immediately publicly expressed their solidarity with Kamala Harris. It is all the more surprising that this sign has not yet been received from the Obamas. As a result, it was speculated that Michelle Obama could be running for president on her own. This idea is now clearly off the table.

Harris promptly takes on Donald Trump

Harris would like to take the momentum to a first public debate with Republican challenger Donald Trump (78). However, his camp is said to have no interest in a TV debate Trump vs. Harris for the time being – she should first be confirmed as the official candidate of the Democrats, according to US media.

Harris immediately used this supposed sign of weakness from Trump to lash out. “Whatever happened to ‘any time, any place’?” she wondered, given Trump’s previous and typically bold statements that he always wanted to face a debate.

However, the official nomination of Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate is unlikely to take long. The party has already decided to speed up the selection process. Intra-party opponents only have until July 27 to declare their candidacy.

If Harris remains the only candidate, which is currently what it looks like, the virtual election of the representatives would take place on August 1st – otherwise on August 3rd. It is considered a formality that she receives the necessary number of votes. In short: In a week at the latest, Harris should officially be confirmed as Trump’s challenger in the race for the White House.
