In an RTL quiz show, Jana Ina Zarrella recalled a holiday experience that made her “terrified” of sharks.
Presenter Sonja Zietlow (56) and science journalist Dirk Steffens (56) presented “Wonders of our Earth – The Big Geo Quiz” on Saturday (27 July). Three celebrity duos competed against each other in quiz and action rounds in the studio and discovered “the wonders of our planet”. After a clip about sharks in the Bahamas, Sonja Zietlow was not the only one to admit her fear of the animals.
Jana Ina Zarrella: “Thought my life was over”
“I’m not afraid of much, but sharks are somehow part of it,” explained the presenter. “I find them so scary.” But in the clip in which a scientist dives with sharks and frees them with her bare hands from the fishing hooks in their mouths, you almost grow fond of the animals, explains Zietlow. Candidate Jana Ina Zarrella (47) doesn’t quite agree with her.
“I get a heart attack just thinking about a shark coming near me,” she admitted. Then she told of a vacation in Hawaii where she actually wanted to swim with dolphins in the open sea. “Just before we jump out, the lady, the guide, said: Please be quiet, otherwise the sharks will come.” Then she entered the water very carefully and swam calmly when “suddenly ten giant animals moved very quickly beneath us. When dolphins swim past so quickly, you don’t know if they are dolphins or sharks!” She almost had a panic attack. “I thought: Now it’s over. My life is over.” Luckily they were dolphins, “but I’m really terrified of them.”
Aside from the bad shark memories, things initially went well for Zarrella and team partner Wigald Boning (57). They went into the final as favorites, but were defeated by Ross Antony (50) and Lucy Diakovska (48). They raised 18,100 euros for a good cause. The 10,700 euros of the runner-up and the 6,000 euros of the third-placed Michi Beck (56) and Smudo (56) will also be donated.
