The Portuguese fado singer Misia, who made a significant contribution to the renewal of the genre, has died at the age of 69. As her relatives told local media, the musician, whose real name was Susana Maria Alfonso de Aguiar, died on Saturday in a hospital in Lisbon from the effects of a long illness. Her record label announced on Monday that her funeral would take place on August 7.
Along with Mariza, Ana Moura and Cristina Branco, Misa was one of the artists who renewed Portugal’s traditional melancholic music style, Fado. The Porto-born artist released her last album in 2022.

Misia’s death aroused great sympathy in her homeland. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa praised her as a “passionate” fado singer who worked “at the interface of other musical styles.” The Portuguese Ministry of Culture stated: “Misia played a key role in the renewal of fado and was not afraid to experiment with new sounds and less conventional approaches.”
