Ralf Schumacher explains: Coming out “in order to be able to live a normal life”

Ralf Schumacher has spoken for the first time about the events surrounding his coming out. He also gave a reason for this step.

Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher (49) has spoken in detail for the first time about his public coming out about two weeks ago and the reactions to it. Schumacher famously declared his love for his partner Étienne on the evening of the European Championship final. This attracted a lot of attention and resulted in huge, predominantly positive reactions. In a conversation with his Sky colleague Peter Hardenacke, Schumacher now spoke in detail for the first time about the events.

First interview after coming out

“To be honest, I didn’t expect it, nor that so many people would be interested, and that so much would be said about it publicly. And I thought that I was a bit out of the spotlight,” says Schumacher.

He particularly highlighted the positive reactions from the world of Formula 1. “But I also thought it was nice to see how it worked in Formula 1,” said the former Williams driver. “The response from the team bosses, drivers and so on” was “very nice to see” for him.

Ralf Schumacher: “This is purely selfish and about Étienne and me”

When asked whether he wanted to convey a broader message with his post, Schumacher answered with a clear no. “I don’t want to stand for anything either, but this is purely selfishly about Étienne and me, and that it is also clear and unambiguous who the partner at my side is,” he continues.

With his coming out, he pursued the goal of being able to “live a normal life afterwards – in Formula 1 and with all the people I meet.”

Schumacher had spoken out again on Instagram just one day after coming out and thanked the public for the great support. “Thank you very much for the numerous congratulations and comments. We are very happy and thank you all,” which shows him arm in arm with his partner. The following weekend, Étienne accompanied him to the Hungarian Grand Prix, where Schumacher was doing his job as a Sky expert. There, the two appeared together in public as a couple for the first time.
