Gerd Gottlob is one of the best-known German sports commentators. He is now retiring, but will remain with the broadcaster ARD in another position.
Long-time international match commentator Gerd Gottlob is ending his career as a reporter. “I’ve been thinking for a long time about finding the right time as a commentator when I can say: That was wonderful and now it’s good,” said the 59-year-old TV journalist to the German Press Agency. ARD man Gottlob has commented on more than 100 football matches live and is one of the best-known commentators in the country.
The quarter-finals of the European Football Championship, with the late exit of the German national football team against Spain, “was a spectacular conclusion,” said Gottlob. “I am grateful for the great time and the opportunity that ARD gave me.” He will also end his career as a reporter for the Bundesliga, which he covered for 21 years. Gottlob will continue to work as head of sports at NDR. He is currently working as head of the ARD’s Olympic team in Paris.
Gerd Gottlob’s successor is still pending
Gottlob commentated on his first live match in 1997 at the U16 European Championships. He is best known for his work at international matches and at five World Championships since 2006, when he replaced Gerd Rubenbauer. At the 2016 European Championships, Gottlob was the final reporter for ARD. There is no successor yet. Tom Bartels, Christina Graf and Florian Naß are currently commentating on the live matches on ARD.
