Bella Hadid apologizes for Adidas controversy

Adidas wanted to use Bella Hadid to advertise a running shoe designed for the 1972 Munich Olympics, but was criticized by the Israeli government. Now the model has spoken out.

Model Bella Hadid has commented on the controversial advertising campaign with sportswear manufacturer Adidas. “I am shocked, I am dismayed and I am disappointed by the lack of sensitivity that went into this campaign,” said a story on the 27-year-old’s Instagram profile.

Adidas wanted to use her to promote a running shoe that had been designed for the 1972 Olympic Games. The Israeli government was offended by the fact that Hadid had been chosen as the face of the campaign. Hadid’s father is Palestinian and has repeatedly made anti-Semitic statements online. Israel also accuses the model of having made anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic statements.

Bella Hadid: Didn’t know about historical connection

At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Palestinian terrorists carried out an attack on the Israeli team. Eleven athletes and officials were killed.

Following the criticism, Adidas announced that it would change the campaign. Now Hadid has said: “Before the campaign was released, I had no knowledge of the historical connection to the horrific events of 1972.” Her team and Adidas should have known, and she should have done more research herself, Hadid continued.

If she had been informed about this, she would not have taken part in the campaign. Hadid also commented on anti-Semitism: “I do not believe in hatred in any form, including anti-Semitism.”
