In the late 1980s, New York City It is taken by gangs of drug traffickers and crime rates are the highest in the city’s history. Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix) who runs a club in Brooklyn who is visited by members of the Russian mafia, takes advantage of the situation, but does not get involved. His father and brother, police officers, insist that at some point he will have to follow in their footsteps.
Green doesn’t want to know anything of his family’s professional life. He is the popular public relations officer for El Caribe, the legendary Russian-run nightclub in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. The last name was changed so that no one would associate him with the New York police. Despite being at work, Bobby has a great time greeting friends and clients at the discotheque, or dancing with Amada (Eva Mendes), his beautiful Puerto Rican girlfriendto the beat of disco music.
Bobby try to stay away from the Russian gangster who uses the nightclub as a hideout. The same gangster who wants to catch Joseph (Mark Wahlberg), the brother Bobby Police, and his father Burt (Robert Duvall), the legendary deputy chief of police.
As he did in his first two films – “The Night is Ours” is the third – director and screenwriter James Gray returns to the streets and society in which he lived his childhood and adolescence to tell a a story about police and the mafia in which family takes on special importance.
