Joaquin Phoenix spoke about the filming of Joker 2: Folly of Two and the reaction of his co-star Lady Gaga when she heard him sing.

Phoenix will reprise his role as Arthur Fleck in the musical sequel to Todd Phillips about the DC Comics villain, The Joker.

“I remember that She spit out coffee the first time I sang, so that made me feel good“It was exciting and made me feel safe,” Phoenix said jokingly in an interview with Empire.

Gaga, who joins the sequel in the role of Joker’s love interest Harley Quinn, “She was always very encouraging”Phoenix says, recalling that the singer told him, “Go with what you feel, it’s okay.”

“For someone who is not an artist in that sense, it can be… uncomfortable to do, but also very exciting,” he added.

Lady Gaga’s Change in Her Singing Style for the Joker Sequel

For the “Bad Romance” singer, playing a character in a musical meant she had to harmonize differently than she usually does.

“People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That’s me as a performer, but that’s not what this movie is about; I’m playing a character,” she told the publication. “So I worked a lot on the way I sang so that it was coming from Lee and not from me as a performer.”

The cast of Joker 2: Folie à Deux also includes Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson and Zazie BeetzThe film is part of DC Elseworlds and is not part of the universe that Peter Safran and James Gunn have been building since taking over DC Studios.

Joker 2: Folie à Deux hits theaters on October 3.
