Young victims of racism in the United States.
What is When They See Us, a Netflix miniseries, about?
The Netflix mini-series “When They See Us” It tells the story of a media and judicial case plagued by discrimination that occurred in 1989 in New York called “The Central Park 5.” On April 19 of that year, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise were charged with rape by the New York police and put on trial.
The only reason given by the police for arresting them was their skin colour, because they believed the crime had been committed by a black person. They were sentenced to prison despite being under 16 and with no evidence incriminating them. They were only released in 2002 when a serial killer and rapist (Matías Reyes) confessed to being the sole perpetrator of the crime and the DNA from the victim’s body matched his.
Thus They See Us recounts step by step the media and judicial treatment carried out in those years, exposing the process tainted by racism that led these children to prison without any evidence.
