People: Richard Gere: My body is like a hotel room

The Hollywood star is a follower of Buddhism and an old friend of the Dalai Lama. In the interview, he explains how he often reminds himself of his own mortality.

Hollywood star Richard Gere says he meditates on his own death every day. Although he understood early on that he would die at some point, he still had to internalize this knowledge, the 74-year-old explained to the magazine “Bunte” (Thursday). “That requires daily practice, over and over again. You have to keep in mind that everything is transient.”

He explained: “You can call it meditation or just reflection or analysis. A meditative technique is to constantly imagine yourself dying. Because by doing so you change the way you think about yourself.”

Gere turned to Buddhism many years ago and is friends with the Dalai Lama. The actor (“Pretty Woman,” “Chicago”) says he believes that when he dies, he only leaves his body, while his consciousness lives on. “My body is like a hotel room. I checked in, and one day I’ll check out again. That’s why I’ve made my peace with death.”
