Prince William: How heartlessly he once dumped Princess Kate

A royal relationship like in a fairy tale? Not even Prince William and Princess Kate can look back on such a love story. The prince was pretty mean to his long-term partner at times.

Prince William and the commoner Kate Middleton have been a couple for over twenty years, or more precisely since the end of 2002. But it took almost nine years before the lovers found their way to the altar. The relationship had to endure some ups and downs. In 2007, there was even a brief separation, which was apparently initiated by Prince William.

In the British tabloid press, Kate Middleton was known for a long time as “Waity Katie” because the prince simply did not want to put a ring on her finger. She had to wait nine years, until February 2011, for her current husband to dare to ask for her hand in marriage. The wedding followed just a few weeks later, on April 29, 2011.

The biography “Catherine, The Princess of Wales” by Robert Jobson now takes a closer look at the love story of Prince William and Princess Kate. After graduating from university in 2005, Prince William visited Kate at her family home every Friday during his military training at Sandhurst. One of the first appearances as a couple followed in December 2006. Kate was invited to the graduation ceremony of William’s military training, which suggested that their relationship was serious and possibly heading towards an engagement.

But shortly afterwards, the explosion. According to Jobson, Prince William cancelled the New Year’s Eve plans in 2007 at short notice, which is said to have indicated that “something was wrong”. The gut feeling was right. Shortly afterwards, Prince William called his girlfriend to end the relationship. He explained that they both “needed a bit of space to find their own way” and that he could not promise her a marriage proposal at that time.

The author describes the situation further: “In an emotionally charged 30-minute conversation, both admitted that they had different views. It was a devastating blow to Catherine, who felt doubly disappointed because she had been dumped on the phone.” Not the polite way to do it.

While Prince William was in the barracks, Kate went out to party

While Prince William celebrated the split with a night out at London’s Mahiki nightclub, Kate, who Jobson said was “determined to hide her pain from the outside world,” sought refuge from the media and traveled to Dublin with her mother, Carole Middleton. She then went on holiday to Ibiza with a friend. On their return to London, Kate and her sister Pippa were often photographed leaving clubs – apparently intentionally, as these images were seen by William, who spent most of his time in the barracks as an army officer.

Whether it was a plan to make a media appearance and remind the prince or a happy coincidence, Prince William changed his mind and the couple reunited at a “Freakin’ Naughty”-themed costume party thrown by jockey Sam Waley-Cohen in March 2007. “Kate arrived dressed as a nurse and William immediately went up to her. They then spent the first part of the evening in deep conversation before heading to the dance floor where they eventually kissed.”
