In a joint interview, Prince Albert II and his wife, Princess Charlène, spoke about the turbulent beginnings of their relationship. The first date ended in trouble.
Charm offensive by the Monaco royals: Prince Albert II and his wife Charlène gave a joint interview to the French magazine “Paris Match”. For years, rumors about the negative state of their marriage have persisted. Whether this is exactly why they spoke about the beginnings of their relationship is something only the couple themselves know.

In a good mood, they recall in the interview how they met. At that time, in 2001, Charlène Wittstock was a professional swimmer at the “Mare Nostrum” competition in Monaco. The year before, she had won the gold medal there, and in 2001 the royal admirer came along. “I thought she was an excellent swimmer and that she was a friendly, smiling and approachable person,” Albert explains in the interview. “I don’t know if I should say it, but that evening she got into trouble because of me because I didn’t bring her home on time,” Albert II reveals. And his wife agrees. “It’s true that I got into some trouble that evening, but we won’t say any more than that,” says Charlène.
But their relationship remained a secret for a long time. It was not until five years later, at the 2006 Winter Olympics, that the two were photographed together. “We had already gone out in public before, but no one had really noticed before these photos, that’s true,” the prince remembers.

For Charlène, the games were doubly special. “Firstly, because I had never been to a Winter Olympics before… and had hardly seen any snow up until then. And being able to share this moment with my new boyfriend made it all the more amazing,” she says.
Sport has connected the royal couple for years. So it’s no wonder that they also performed together at the Olympic Games in Paris. Which sport would Albert use to describe his marriage? The prince has an interesting answer to this: “Perhaps a relay race,” the 66-year-old tells “Paris Match.” “A constant battle and, above all, great mutual support,” says Albert.
