Legendary filmmaker David Lynch has revealed that he suffers from pulmonary emphysema, which is why he can no longer leave his house.
Cult director David Lynch (78), who was responsible for unforgettable film classics such as “Blue Velvet”, “Mulholland Drive” and the television series “Twin Peaks”, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with pulmonary emphysema. Due to his illness, the filmmaker can no longer leave his own home. Lynch reports this in the current issue of the film magazine “Sight and Sound” ().
Self-isolation like during the Corona crisis
“I have emphysema because I smoked for so long, and that’s why I have to stay home whether I want to or not,” Lynch said. Catching an illness, “even a cold,” “would be very bad for me,” the 78-year-old continued, explaining the reasons for his self-isolation in his own four walls. Lynch can also “only walk a short distance” before he runs out of oxygen.
Will David Lynch ever direct again?
Lynch’s last major directorial work dates back to 2017. For the US channel Showtime, he directed the third season of his mystery series “Twin Peaks”, which originally ran from 1990 to 1991 and starred “Blue Velvet” star Kyle MacLachlan (65).
Regarding his possible future as a director, Lynch said it was unlikely that he would sit in the director’s chair again. And if he ever did, he would not be physically on set. “I would direct from a distance if it came to that,” he explained, adding: “I wouldn’t like that very much.”
Emphysema is a chronic lung disease that, among other things, leads to shortness of breath. It is usually caused by pollution or smoking cigarettes. The director is said to have smoked for many years.
